About Us
One of the foremost chamber choirs in Derbyshire
The Sitwell Singers have been making music together for 60 years.
Our 2026/27 season is our Diamond Anniversary!
We have built a reputation for "stylistically spot-on" performances of a varied repertoire, from the great choral masterpieces of European sacred music to folk,
jazz and new music composed specially for us.
We rehearse at St John the Evangelist, Mill Street, Derby DE1 3HZ,
but perform in venues all over the city and county.
With a core of 32 singers, we present four to five concerts each season,
with a mix of different types of music. Whether we're singing a cappella or with brass,
or a period string ensemble, we're known for our "huge dynamic range"
and our "immaculate blend".
Our Musical Director is Dexter Drown.

Our Story
Founded in 1966, the Sitwell Singers originated as a group of friends who gathered
to sing on Sunday evenings in each others' homes. One of these was Stainsby Hall,
once owned by the Sitwell family, which inspired the choir's name.
Since those early days, the choir has developed into an established performing
chamber choir with a broad repertoire. Over the years, the choir has been led
by nine resident conductors, as well as a number of guest conductors.
Today, the Sitwell Singers continues to perform a varied programme of concerts,
host an annual Come and Sing event, and provide musical support for special occasions and events throughout Derbyshire.
